Chess in Munich: clubs, bars and tournaments

Most chess in Munich happens on a fixed club evening: the clubs of the Munich district meet once or twice a week in seniors' centres, parish halls, inns and schools, from Moosach and Schwabing to Solln and Neuperlach and out to Garching, Dachau and Freising. In the north the Caissa Center fills the month with rated blitz, rapid and classical events, and every week rapid tournaments in three bars bring new players to the board.

Chess960 around Munich

German players call it Chess960, Schach960 or Fischer-Random, and around Munich it has left only older or undated traces. The Munich district once played a Schach960 individual championship as a rapid open, and its page shows no later edition; the FC Bayern chess department writes that the district's Chess960 title was played at its Monday venue; the Caissa Center names a 960 tournament, with the starting position drawn by lot, among its fun formats without giving a date.

With the pieces behind the pawns shuffled into one of 960 starting positions, memorised openings count for nothing from the first move. Between club evenings the variant can be played online at ch960.com.

No dated Chess960 game on a physical board around Munich is on record for the period these entries cover.

How to read an entry

Each entry is put together from pages a reader can open: the club register of the Schachbezirk München with every club's room and evening, the club finder of the Deutscher Schachbund, the FIDE list of rated tournaments, Meetup listings, the city library's programme and the clubs' and organisers' own sites. The date beside each fact is the day its page was read.

Within a list, the entries with the most recent evidence come first; the order says nothing about quality. A question no page answers is marked "not stated by sources". The status lines, the three source marks and what this directory leaves aside are set out under how the listing is sourced.

Has your club evening moved?

Munich clubs change rooms when a seniors' centre or a parish hall is renovated, and evenings shift when a new season of the team championship begins. If an entry is behind, or a club, bar or tournament is missing, send a short note with a link to the page that shows it.
